Camping Equipment Rental for Death Valley?

We're arriving at Las Vegas airport and renting a car to take us to Death Valley. I know of one place I can rent camping equipment, but it is out of our way (toward Hoover Dam). Does anyone know of another place on the west side of Las Vegas on the way out to Death Valley National Park?

Sonny answers:

Camping equipment can be rented from a variety of places. Sports chalet and REI both have locations in Lost Wages, I mean Las Vegas,

sportchalet.com
(702) 255-7570 - 8825 W Charleston Blvd, Las Vegas, NV.

Rei.com
(702) 896-7111 - 2220 Village Walk Dr, #150, Henderson, NV.

If you want an RV El Monte Rv rental has a location there

Best place to register for camping/hiking equipment?

My fiance and I would like to register for camping/hiking equipment for our wedding, but can't find a good place that has a registry. We looked at Gander Mountain and they don't have a registry. Any suggestions?

Sonny answers:

REI has a registry: http://www.rei.com/giftregistry

What sort of camping equipment would I need to take with me to Antarctica?

Also what kind of food would be light in weight high in energy and sugar and last 3 people for 5 days in Antarctica?

Sonny answers:

There is a checklist of field equipment in the (Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions)ANARE Field Manual.

As for food, I usually dont recommend high sugar foods, but you can if you want go with energy bars but I usually dont spend more than 3 days eating them. I have not tried them myself but you can get meals ready to eat (MRE) over the internet or at Ebay, These are the same at the US Army uses but maybe near their expiration dates. They are high in calories but low in fiber.

In my opinion, what you need depends on where in Antarctic you go and when as "severe low temperatures vary with latitude, elevation, and distance from the ocean; East Antarctica is colder than West Antarctica because of its higher elevation; Antarctic Peninsula has the most moderate climate; higher temperatures occur in January along the coast and average slightly below freezing"

Is there a website that posts reviews of hiking/camping equipment?

I'm looking for a site that reviews camping/hiking/outdoor equipment..?
......by the people who use it. I dont want another "outfitter" promoting their products, but a site where people who have actually used the products comment on their durability effctiveness and even the trails and areas they have explored.
Any one know of a site like this?

Sonny answers:

You can even become a gear tester here:

How did you improvise when vital camping equipment was forgotten at home when preparing for a camping trip.?

"ARGHH" !!!, you thought you had everything planned, organized and packed. Now you are at the campsite and there is no... .
Matches , Tent Poles , Toilet Paper or whatever. So what did you do about it ?

Sonny answers:

Firstly, think "Things can be worse".
Secondly, think of one resource at a time. Toilet paper? Go old school. Leaves.
Tent poles? Psh, sticks and branches. Same with matches. Small twigs and brush light easy with a little heat. Think simple. Don't make it so complex.

What's the top gas mileage vehicles w/4+rear seats and room for camping equipment?

I need room for at least four children and two adults. I don't want the children in the front seat. We also like to camp and need ample storage room. Of course, we need the best gas mileage. Safety rating is another concern.

Sonny answers:

Im sure your trying to stay in style, so i'll give you the cheapest best options. Cheapest as in , new cars.
I would go with the Tahoe or Yukon. They off them as a hybrid also.

Which company provides the best camping equipment?

Mostly I want to look at sleeping bags, tents, pads, all that stuff. I'm not really looking to the cheaper stuff, but if need be the more expensive stuff because I know it will be goo quality. So far I have looked at North Face, L.L.Bean, and Eureka.

Sonny answers:

In general camping supplies the manufacturing company with the strongest reputation world wide is Coleman. You don't have to spend big dollars to get great equipment and Coleman gear is often the most copied. Most everything is made in China these days though be it Coleman, North face, or Eureka. Also often the same gear is made in the same factory with different names glued on it. What tells you if a product is any good or not are the reviews you get from the people that have used it. Have you ever heard a complaint about a Coleman lantern for example? I have not, so why even buy a knock off century brand or primos. Now of course I can't say that for every Coleman product some of their gear is just plain to heavy for backpacking and that's not even their primary market. Now as for suppliers like L.L. Bean, who by the way do what I said before they stick their lable on other manufactures goods, when they offer name brand goods like Coleman or MSR or others and the price is right go ahead and buy it you know you won't be disappointed. I like to buy from places that I can try it before I buy it and REI is a supplier that has that feature. They also show the reviews of all the products they sell and if it sucks they dump it. So check them out and compare.
